Coldworker: interview to Hell Divine

Pessoal, essa é a entrevista em inglês, sem edição, que está publicada na Hell Divine nº10 (em português). A intenção é que os gringos leiam o material. O novo e excelente CD, "The Doomsayer's Call", saiu no Brasil via Shinigami Records!

Coldworker: interview to Hell Divine (WITHOUT EDITION)

HELL DIVINE: Coldworker isn’t so known in Brazil yet. So, please, can you tell us a little bit about the band and it’s name?
ANDERS BERTILSSON: We're a 5 piece Death Metal band from Örebro, Sweden. We've released three albums, and taken part in a couple of tribute albums, as well as a few split EP's. Our drummer Anders Jakobson stumbled upon the term “cold work” while searching for name suggestions. “Cold work” is a form of industry when you “shape (metal) without using heat” and we figured that we’re a bunch of Scandinavians (no heat) creating metal. Also, according to the web pages explaining “cold work”, “cold working” includes operations that involve grinding, blasting, carving and other stuff, and something that involves “grinding, blasting and carving” is exactly what we’re doing.

HELL DIVINE: You started your activities in 2006 and released the full length “The Contaminated Void” in the same year. How did you get that?
ANDERS BERTILSSON: Since we had the contact established (with our previous label Relapse Records) through our drummer Anders Jakobson, we talked to them, and they were interested in signing us. We had material for an entire album pretty quickly, so we figured there was no time to lose. We recorded "The Contaminated Void" during the summer, and it ended up being released in November 2006.

HELL DIVINE: Your style of music is a mixing of American Death Metal and European Grindcore. Do you agree with that? What can you say about your music style?
ANDERS BERTILSSON: Yes, that would be a fitting description! I consider us as a Death Metal band, with influences from several other genres of metal, perhaps most notably Grindcore. But we try to bring influences in from whatever we feel fits the music.

HELL DIVINE: Recently you have released your new album – “The Doomsayer's Call”. How do you describe this CD?
ANDERS BERTILSSON: It feels like the next logical step for Coldworker as a band. To me, it's an album that solidifies what our music is about, and I think it's more dynamic than our previous two albums. It strives to expand our musical ambitions, and to channel them into something that still feels like its held together, instead of being all over the place.

HELL DIVINE: The album cover is awesome. How did you develop it’s conception?
ANDERS BERTILSSON: Thanks! We knew from the start that we wanted something a little different than what you might usually expect from a Death Metal band. We've had the honor to have the artwork to our previous albums done by Orion Landau, and they both contain a central figure. All of us wanted this album to have something that differed from our previous albums, but still with a central figure. The idea to the artwork originated when I saw "Metropolis", the 1927 film by Fritz Lang. I talked to the other guys and said that it would be awesome to let the artwork be inspired by it. Joel instantly like the idea, and the other guys thought it might be cool as well. Then we got in touch with Pär Olofsson who has done some amazing stuff for a lot of bands, and he envisioned our ideas, resulting in an amazing piece of album artwork. I totally understand the comic book argument, even though I don't look at it like that (but that's probably just because I know the story behind it). I guess people can make whatever they want of it, but we had a certain idea behind it.

HELL DIVINE: Coldworker is a very nice Swedish band. Do you think the band has the recognition that it diserves?
ANDERS BERTILSSON: Well, I think we do, because we have not been touring actively enough to be a "bigger" band. We would all like to play live a lot more, but we have had really bad timing, and unfortunate circumstances that have made it hard for us to get out and play. However, we're really trying to change that now.

HELL DIVINE: You have a relatively big discography. Don’t you think it’s time to release a DVD?
ANDERS BERTILSSON: There's not enough material recorded for that unfortunately, and I think it's something that we wouldn't do until we've toured a lot more. Sure, it would be cool, but I don't think we're "big" enough as a band to do that.

HELL DIVINE: What about a clip?
ANDERS BERTILSSON: That would be a good start. But we haven't really discussed that idea, so I'm not sure if we're really feeling that it would be something good for us right now. But if we could agree on the right idea, and make it the way we wanted it, then it would be cool.

HELL DIVINE: Any plans to play in Brazil?
ANDERS BERTILSSON: We'd love to! No plans as of right now, but tell your promoters to fly us over! Brazil seems like a fantastic country, and it would be awesome to be able to experience that.

HELL DIVINE: Thanks a lot for the interview, guys. Please, leave a message to Brazilian fans.
ANDERS BERTILSSON: Thanks to you as well for wanting to talk to us! We hope to be able to come and play for you guys. In the meantime; check out our new album "The Doomsayer's Call"! Obrigado Brazil! and check out our website www.coldworker.com
