Entrevista - Vomitory

O novo trabalho da Vomitory – “Opus Mortis VIII” – lançado há exatamente um mês, tem repercutido de forma bastante positiva na mídia especializada ao redor do mundo. Aproveitando a ótima fase da banda - formada por Urban Gustafssom (guitarra), Erik Rundqvist (vocais/baixo), Peter Östlund  (guitarra) e Tobias Gustafssom (bateria) -  o blog Som Extremo entrevistou por e-mail este último, que brevemente falou sobre o novo disco, sobre a cena extrema sueca, e sobre tocar por aqui, entre outros assuntos. E infelizmente parece que se apresentar no Brasil ainda é um sonho distante... Aproveito para deixar o apelo: produtoras, que tal trazerem uma das melhores bandas de brutal death mundial para o país???? Pois bem, com a palavra, Tobias Gustafssom.

Som Extremo: O que pode contar sobre o novo álbum “Opus Mortis VIII” para os fãs brasileiros? Qual o significado do seu nome?

Tobias Gustafssom: “Opus Mortis VIII” é (obviamente) nosso oitavo álbum, uma continuação de nosso trabalho anterior. O som típico da Vomitory está totalmente presente, mas há alguns novos detalhes incorporados à música. E partes mais “groovadas” também aparecem mais nesse trabalho do que nos anteriores, acredito. Até agora, que eu saiba, os antigos fãs estão muito satisfeitos e o álbum parece atrair também novos admiradores.

 

Som Extremo: Você acha que a banda tem o reconhecimento que merece?

Gustafssom: Não. Porém não é nada que realmente nos incomode. Mas com certeza, considerando tanta porcaria por aí que consegue mais atenção e reconhecimento, definitivamente acho que merecemos mais sim. Por outro lado, nunca visamos fama e fortuna com a banda. Primeiramente e o mais importante, queremos apenas tocar brutal death metal porque amamos isso.

Som Extremo: Os álbuns da Vomitory têm sua própria identidade. Vocês são uma banda de brutal death, mas misturam elementos hardcore e outros ao seu estilo. Por favor, fale um pouco sobre isso.

Gustafssom: Muito obrigado. Bem, não escutamos somente death metal, então acho que é natural ouvir algumas outras influências e elementos para agregar ao nosso estilo. Quando entramos no death metal no final dos anos 80, eu também escutava heavy metal tradicional e algumas coisas hardcore e punk. Então acho que isso me influenciou e me fez um bom compositor.

Som Extremo: E como funciona o processo de composição da Vomitory?

Gustafssom: Geralmente crio uma música sozinho, gravo uma demo simples em casa e depois mostro para os outros caras aprovarem. Então Erik (Rundqvist – vocal/baixo) escreve as letras para ela. Esse é o procedimento normal. Peter (Östlund – guitarra) também cria músicas tão bem quanto escreve letras. Nunca escrevemos composições completas juntos, muito embora Peter e eu compomos juntos durante o ensaio em nosso estúdio e finalizamos alguma canção quase pronta que um de nós escreveu.

Som Extremo: Hoje em dia, a Suécia tem grandes bandas extremas. Como é a cena aí? Que bandas você destacaria?

Gustafssom: Acho que a cena é muito boa. O death metal continua fluindo, mas as pessoas ainda são muito preguiçosas para sair e assistir a shows. Infelizmente, sou um deles atualmente. Duas boas novas bandas são a Fetus Stench e Maim. Ambas detonam!

Som Extremo: Quando a Vomitory virá ao Brasil?

Gustafssom: Não tenho ideia. Não sei se isso acontecerá algum dia, infelizmente. Tem havido algumas propostas do Brasil e da América do Sul durante os últimos anos, mas na maioria dos casos, não é viável financeiramente. Contudo vamos ver o que acontece no futuro. Seria demais expelir nosso death metal sobre a plateia brasileira!

Som Extremo: What can you tell about the new album – “Opus Mortis VIII” - to Brazilian fans? What is the meaning of the name of the album?

Tobias Gustafssom: “Opus Mortis VIII” is (obviously) our eighth album and it is a natural continuation on our previous album. The typical Vomitory sound is totally present, but there are some new details incorporated in the music and the groovier parts are more present on this album than on any album I guess. As far as I know, the old fans are very satisfied and the album seems to attract new fans as well.

Som Extremo: Do you think the band has the recognition that it diserves?

Gustafssom: No. But it’s nothing that really bugs us. But sure, considering how much crap out there that gets much attention and recognition, I definitely think we deserve a lot more. On the other hand, we never aimed for fame and fortune with this band. First and foremost, we just want to play brutal death metal because we love it.

Som Extremo: Vomitory’s albums have their own identity. You are a brutal death metal band, but you mix some hardcore and other elements in your style. Please, tell me about that.

Gustafssom: Thank you. Well, we don’t only listen to death metal so I guess it’s quite natural to hear some other influences and elements in our style. When I got into death metal in the late ‘80’s I also listened to the usual heavy metal and some hardcore and punk. So I think that has influenced me and shaped me as a song writer.

Som Extremo: How is the process of composing?

Gustafssom: Usually, I write the music for a song alone, record a simple demo of it at home and then I give it to the other guys for approval. Then Erik writes the lyrics to it. That’s the normal procedure. Peter also writes music as well as writing some lyrics. We never write complete songs together, even though Peter and I get together sometimes in our rehearsal room and finish a song that one of us have written half-finished.

Som Extremo: Nowadays Sweden has great extreme bands. How is the scene in your country? Could you highlit some bands?

Gustafssom: The scene is quite good I think. The death metal keeps flowing. But people are still way too lazy to get out and go to live shows. Unfortunately, I’m one of them nowadays. A couple of really good new bands are Fetus Stench and Maim. They both kick serious ass.

Som Extremo: When will Vomitory come to Brazil?

Gustafssom: I have no idea. I don’t know if it will ever happen at all, unfortunately. There have been some offers from Brazil and South America during the last years, but as mostly is the case, it’s not financially workable. But we will see what happens in the future. It would be great to spew our death metal onto a crazy Brazilian crowd!
